About YODS

Why Dance?

Dance is not only about technique, choreography, or self-expression. It is also one of the most powerful ways to learn more about yourself.

It is one of the few activities that engages the body, mind, emotions, creativity, and presence all at the same time. The true value of dance is not found in mastering steps or routines, but in what you discover along the way.

Dance challenges both body and mind. It helps you stay active, develop self-trust, strengthen your connection to yourself, and rediscover joy in movement.

Dance also offers something many of us are missing in today’s world: presence. In a life filled with messages, emails, social media, and constant distractions, dance brings your attention back to the present moment. Back to the music. The movement. The experience itself.

For many, dance becomes one of the easiest ways to experience flow, where the mind becomes quiet and the pressure to perform fades away.

At YODS, we do more than teach Ballroom and Latin dance. We give you the tools to build confidence, connect with yourself, and discover the joy that dance can bring to your life. Along the way, you will also improve your fitness, coordination, balance, and body awareness.

Our mission is to help you develop confidence, presence, connection, and joy through movement.

Q & A

Common questions

Starting out

Do I need any previous dance experience?+

No. We'll get to know you with a few quick questions when you join, and suggest where to start based on your level and what excites you. Then you'll find your own pace. Every dancer begins somewhere.

Do I need a partner?+

No. You can practise everything on your own. If you have a partner, you can also explore movement together, with lessons that show both sides of the partnership.

Do I need a specific space to practise?+

No. You can dance anywhere: at home, outdoors, in a studio, or wherever you feel comfortable. Just make sure you have enough space to move safely.

What should I wear? Do I need special shoes?+

No special clothing or shoes are needed. Wear something comfortable and move as you are: barefoot, in socks, or with shoes if it feels right for you.

Can I cancel anytime?+

Yes. Cancel any time and you won't be billed again. Your access stays active until the end of the payment period.

Your practice

How often should I practise, and how much time do I need?+

There's no perfect amount of time. The most important thing is simply to keep moving.

Even 10–15 minutes can make a difference. Our 25-Minute Practices are designed for real life, and longer courses are broken into short lessons you can return to whenever it fits your day.

Yes. Every course is on-demand video. Watch on your schedule, re-watch as often as you like, on any device.

What if I feel awkward or unsure?+

That's completely normal. Focus on how it feels, not how it looks. Give yourself time, confidence grows through movement.

What if I don't understand everything right away?+

That's part of the process. Repeat, explore, and move at your own pace. There's no rush.

Is there a right way to do this?+

No. There's no single right way. This is your journey, so explore what feels natural to you.

Why do dancers use ballroom and latin shoes?+

Ballroom and latin dance shoes are designed specifically for dancing. They help dancers move more comfortably, safely, and efficiently on the dance floor.

Dance shoes typically feature:

  • A suede sole that provides the ideal balance between grip and glide, allowing controlled turns and smooth movement
  • Reduced friction compared to regular street shoes, helping protect the knees, ankles, and hips during turns
  • Greater flexibility than everyday footwear, allowing the feet to move naturally and articulate through each step
  • Improved balance and floor connection, helping dancers feel and control their movement more precisely
  • Lightweight construction for comfort during longer practice sessions
  • Heel designs that support the posture, weight placement, and technique required in each dance style
  • A secure fit that helps keep the foot stable while dancing

While many experienced dancers choose ballroom or latin shoes, beginners can comfortably start in dance sneakers, practice shoes, or clean indoor shoes that allow easy movement and turning.

What are women's ballroom and latin dance shoes like?+

Women's ballroom (standard) shoes are designed to support the upright posture, stability, and smooth movement required in ballroom dances.

  • Closed-toe design
  • Closed heel for support and stability
  • Typical heel heights range from 2–2.5 inches (5–6.5 cm)
  • Suede sole for smooth gliding and controlled turns
  • Designed to support posture and balance during partner dancing

Women's latin shoes are designed to support the posture, balance, and expressive movement characteristic of latin dances.

  • Usually open-toe, strappy sandals
  • More flexible sole for greater foot articulation
  • Typical heel heights range from 2.5–3 inches (6.5–7.5 cm), though lower and higher options are available
  • Suede sole for controlled turns and movement
  • Designed to support Latin posture, pointed feet, and expressive leg and foot action

For beginners, lower heels are often the most comfortable and stable choice.

What are men's ballroom and latin dance shoes like?+

Men's ballroom (standard) shoes are designed to provide stability, comfort, and smooth movement on the dance floor.

  • Usually black leather lace-up shoes
  • Low heel (typically around 1–1.5 inches / 2.5–4 cm)
  • Closed design for stability and support
  • Suede sole for smooth gliding movements and controlled turns
  • Designed to support the posture and movement required in standard dances

Men's latin shoes are designed to provide flexibility, balance, and support for Latin dance technique.

  • More flexible than ballroom shoes
  • Often feature a Cuban heel
  • Slightly higher heel than Standard shoes
  • Suede sole for controlled turning and movement
  • Designed to support Latin technique, foot pressure, balance, and hip action

Many dancers also train in practice shoes or dance sneakers, which offer excellent comfort and support for regular classes and practice sessions.

AI coaches

What can the AI coaches do?+

Maria and Julio are coaches who show up whenever you do. In a live session they listen as you talk through what you're working on, watch when you show them a move, and reply in the moment with what to try next. You can also send a clip ahead of time and get a written read back, so when you talk with them you've already got somewhere to start.

How does a live AI session work?+

It's a conversation. Tap 'Start a session', and your coach is right there to talk dance with you. Ask anything: how to land a turn, what to try when something feels off, why a step keeps tripping you up. Show them a move if you want their eyes on it, or just talk through what's on your mind.

Can the AI coach review a video I have already recorded?+

Yes. Send in a clip you've recorded, and your coach watches it from start to finish. A minute or two later you'll have a written read on what's working, what to refine, and what to try next. Bring it to a live session anytime you want to talk it through.

Do the AI coaches replace a real teacher?+

No. They are a companion to your practice, not a substitute. The AI coaches are great between live lessons or whenever you want a second pair of eyes, but the foundations still come from the YODS courses and the human coaches behind them.
