Dance term
Footwork
Which part of the foot touches the floor and when, heel, ball, or toe, as you move through a step.
Footwork describes how the foot meets the floor through a step: heel first, ball first, or toe, and how the weight rolls across it. It sounds like a small detail, but it is what gives each dance its texture, the smooth heel-lead of the foxtrot against the sharp, grounded feel of the tango.
Clean footwork also protects your balance and your knees, so it is worth attention from the start.
Also called: foot action.
