Dance term

Alignment

The direction your body and feet face in relation to the room, used to describe and navigate figures.

Alignment is the way dancers describe which way they are facing relative to the room, for example facing or backing the 'line of dance' that runs anticlockwise around the floor. It gives figures a shared map, so a step can be described precisely and couples travel in the same direction.

You rarely think about it as a beginner, but it quietly underlies floorcraft and every travelling figure.

Also called: facing.
