Posture

The tall, balanced carriage that dancing starts from: lifted through the spine, shoulders down, weight poised over the feet.

Almost everything in dance rests on posture. Standing tall through the spine with the shoulders relaxed down and the head balanced on top gives you the poise to move cleanly and the quiet confidence that makes dancing look assured.

It is practical as well as elegant: good posture keeps you balanced over your feet so turns and travelling steps do not throw you off. It is usually the very first thing a teacher works on, and it never stops mattering.

Also called: dance posture, carriage.
