Dance term
Topline
The long, elegant line of the head, neck, and upper body in the ballroom dances, held above a steady frame.
The topline is the shape your upper body makes from the waist up: a tall, slightly extended line through the spine and neck that gives the smooth ballroom dances their poised, lifted look. It sits on top of the frame and is usually the first thing an audience reads.
A strong topline is held quietly with the muscles of the back, not forced or stiff, and it stays calm even while the feet are busy underneath.
Also called: top line.
