Dance term

Balance

Staying poised over your own feet through a movement, so you can move on time and lead or follow without leaning on your partner.

Balance in dancing means carrying your own weight, staying centred over your feet even while turning or travelling. It matters for its own sake, nobody wants to stumble, but it also matters for partnering.

A dancer who is balanced can give a clear lead or a clean follow, while one who is off balance leans on the other and muddies the connection. Much of early practice is quietly about balance.

Also called: poise.
