Dance term

Outside partner

A step taken to the side of the partner rather than between their feet, so the couple can keep travelling in a straight line.

When a dancer steps outside partner, they place a foot to the outside of the partner's body instead of directly in front, letting the couple move down the floor without treading on each other.

It sounds technical, but it is a natural solution to a simple problem, two people cannot keep walking straight into each other, and it appears constantly in the foxtrot, tango, and waltz.

Also called: outside partner position.
