Closed position

Closed position is the default hold for most ballroom dances. The partners stand facing each other in frame, offset very slightly so they can travel forward and back without stepping on each other's feet, connected through the upper body. It is the position most figures begin and end in.

How close the hold is depends on the dance: the swing dances like the waltz use a slightly more open, breathing frame, while the tango closes the distance for a more compact, powerful connection. In every case the couple stays in a single shared shape, which is what makes it possible to lead and follow smoothly.
