Dance term
Musicality
Dancing in a way that reflects the music, its rhythm, phrasing, and mood, not just its beat.
Musicality is the art of matching your dancing to the music beyond simply staying in time: pausing where the music breathes, accenting where it swells, choosing figures that suit its mood. It is what separates technically correct dancing from dancing that holds an audience.
It grows naturally the more you listen, and it is one of the most rewarding parts of the craft to develop.
Also called: musical interpretation.
