Dance term

Lead

To lead is to propose the next movement through the frame so the partner can respond, while also setting the timing and steering around the floor.

Leading is not pushing or steering a partner around. It is a clear, gentle suggestion sent through the frame and the body, a change of direction or weight that the follow can feel and answer in time. A good lead is early and calm enough that the partner has room to respond naturally rather than being yanked into place.

Traditionally one partner leads and the other follows, but either role can be danced by anyone. The skills are learnable and completely separate from who you are, and many dancers eventually learn both.

Also called: leading, leader.
