Dance term
Feather step
A signature foxtrot figure where the leader steps outside the partner, giving the dance its smooth, curving, feather-like flow.
The feather step is one of the foxtrot's defining figures. The leader walks forward and steps outside the partner for one step, creating a soft curving line that feels light, hence 'feather'.
It is often the first thing that makes a foxtrot look like a foxtrot rather than plain walking, and many foxtrot routines open with it.
Also called: feather.
