Bar

A small, repeating group of beats in music; counting in bars is how dancers keep their steps lined up with the rhythm.

A bar, also called a measure, is one repeating cluster of beats in a piece of music. A waltz has three beats to the bar, which is why you count 'one-two-three'; most other dances have four.

Learning to hear where each bar begins is what lets you start figures in the right place and stay with the music instead of drifting off it.

Also called: measure.
